When someone mentions the word “urban”, what immediately springs to mind? For me it is memories of looking for a rare bird called a black redstart in and around the rather aptly named Gas Street Basin in central Birmingham. Back then in the 1980’s it was a run down and uninspiring inner-city area; with high unemployment, knife crime, drug dealing and yet also home to black redstarts.
