A conservation success story in Test Valley

In the first half of the 20th Century our birds of prey were in real trouble. Species like buzzard, peregrine, red kite and sparrowhawk were hunted in such large numbers that they became extinct in many areas of the UK. Then came the pesticide crisis of the 1950’s and 1960’s, where DDT wiped out many of the raptors that were left. In Hampshire it was a rarity to see buzzard and a peregrine would be extremely unlikely.
