Sandpit Wood, Sherfield English, fatal fire in 1941

IT IS interesting how attitudes to protecting children have changed in recent times. Some years ago I was reading The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle to my granddaughter and what caught her attention was that four-year-old Lucy could go for a walk up the hill called Catbells without first seeking her mother’s permission. Nowadays, the idea of a four-year-old going off on her own would be completely unacceptable.
