ONE of the consequences of living in the lower part of an English river valley is that reeds and rushes grow in abundance. The reed beds of nearby Redbridge are a very visible example of this. Another example is the name ‘Great Spaniards’ a lane in the Broadlands estate. This has nothing to do with the people of Spain, but takes its name from a type of rush that grew in the area.
