Most of us presented with the word ‘lake’ think of a large expanse of water but the word ‘lake’ has two ancestors. The expanse of open water called a lake takes its name from medieval French. The older use of the word in England comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘lacu’, meaning a slow moving stream or side-channel.
