Romsey's Christian comment: The story behind the Robin on a Christmas card

The popularity of the Robin in the UK was confirmed in 1960 when it was voted as our national bird, which has long been known as ‘the gardener’s friend’. But Robins on Christmas cards was thought to have been inspired in 19th Century Britain when postmen wore bright red jackets – they gained the nick-name ‘Robins’ as a result! Like today, people would eagerly wait for the postman (‘Robin’) and his delivery of Christmas cards.
